Why and How to Make the Switch to Cruelty Free Products
Here at Ever Wonder, we believe in bringing kindness, compassion and mindfulness in our everyday lives. There are many temptations and shiny products out there covered in promises to change our lives for the better, selling us a dream of a perfect life, smooth skin and dreamy lashes. However, not all that shines is gold. We should be always alert and stay curious about what is hiding underneath the shiny packaging.
Sometimes we get tempted by a lower price and well-known brands just because it’s more convenient. But the price that we are paying is only the tip of an iceberg. By spending our hard-earned money, we are supporting certain values and ideology. We are controlling the demand and are making an impact on how the future is going to look like. As conscious and mindful buyers, have massive power in our hands. If we would only learn to read beyond the brand names and benefits for our skin, we would quickly learn that the impact can be huge and devastating for other living creatures on this planet.
It’s hard to believe, however, it is true, that some of the very well known brands are still funding tests on animals. Why? Because in China, it is compulsory that any product manufactured outside the country must be tested on animals. The brands do not undertake these tests themselves but may fund tests that would be illegal in Europe.
You can easily make the decision today and start more mindful, kinder, cruelty-free and conscious life. Although the change won’t happen in a day, the moment you make a decision, you are taking the first and the most important step towards a more compassionate life. So let’s take a look at some of the ways how to make the switch that would last.
Do your research
Everything starts with research and it should simply become your habit. You learned to research ingredients that you put inside your body and you are very well aware of the ingredients and their benefits that you are putting on your skin. Start doing your research on brands too! Look for information about your go-to brands on unbiased and trustworthy resources such as PETA, Cruelty-Free Kitty or other.
Look out for a bunny
There are three main logos that you should be looking for. Although you should bear in mind that even though some companies are certified, they don’t display the logo on their packaging. So the best way to check is still the lists online.
Things get tricky when we are buying a product that preaches itself as cruelty-free, however, you could inadvertently be supporting a parent company that sanctions animal testing. That’s why it’s useful to know the difference between these three bunnies:
Be sure that you are looking for only certified and official logos as some companies use the fake ones. Bunny on the packaging doesn’t always mean that the product hasn’t been tested on animals…
Make the switch gradually
Start by investigating the products that you already own: make-up, shower gels, toothpaste, household cleaners, moisturisers, feminine hygiene and others. It might be that you are already using and supporting cruelty-free companies without even knowing it (additional karma points to you). Although if you did find out that some of your usual products are not cruelty-free certified, don’t throw them away – it would be wasteful! Use them all up and while finishing them, try to find a cruelty free alternative.
Spread the word
No one likes that one person who is always trying to judge or educate us. Don’t be that person! Be conscious about the way you are delivering the message as you might get the opposite reaction. You can start by simply talking about the newly discovered cruelty-free brands. Although don’t force anyone to do the same – the decision is going to last longer if it’s made personally. Also remember that gifting is always the best way to sneak in some cruelty-free products in your beloved ones’ routines.
Know where to shop
There are plenty of specialised online shops that only stock Cruelty-free products and in most cases switching from Boots to an ethical store would immediately make your life easier. You don’t have to worry if one or another product is cruelty-free or vegan because places like Ever Wonder does all the hard work for you. You can shop without guilt and be sure that you are making the right decision.
